Thumbs up to Fort Collins for reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 11% between 2005 and 2010. This achievement significantly exceeds the 3% emissions reduction goal for 2012 for which the Fort Collins Sustainability Group successfully advocated several years ago.
GHG emissions have been trending downward nationally as well as locally in recent years. While the sluggishness of the economy has certainly played a role, conscious efforts have also contributed to this trend. It is critical to build on these efforts, since scientists say that far deeper reductions will be needed in the coming decades to stabilize Earth’s climate.
