Objectives
The objectives of the FCSG are to:
• Advocate for meeting our energy needs while minimizing our impact on global climate change
• Advocate for creating jobs that contribute toward the ideal of sustainability
• Initiate a community dialogue about what it means to become a sustainable community beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Goals
We intend to build on our accomplishments during the period 2005 – 2008 by achieving the following four goals:
1. Work with the Fort Collins City Council and key stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are taken and sufficient resources are deployed going forward to meet the community-wide greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals established by Council Resolution 2008-051. Those goals are to reduce emissions by 20% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 with respect to a 2005 baseline. The resolution includes a “milestone” of reducing emissions by 3.3% by 2012 with respect to the same baseline.
2. Mobilize on-going community support for dedicating the resources needed to meet community-wide greenhouse gas emissions goals by communicating both the environmental and economic benefits of doing so.
3. Work with the Fort Collins City Council and community stakeholders to develop a formal fifty year vision for becoming a sustainable community. We believe that two key components of this vision will be reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and moving towards climate neutrality.
4. Work with Fort Collins city staff and community stakeholders to begin implementing the city’s vision of becoming a sustainable community.
